This film is based on a true story about a farming community in a picturesque hamlet known as ‘Unagalawehera’, in the ‘Polonnaruwa’ District of Sri Lanka. The protagonist is ‘Premaratne Dissanayake’, a traditional farmer.
He was popularly known as ‘Ukkun Mahaththaya,’ a pet name his father used to call him by in his childhood. Although young ‘Premaratne’ was heir to all his parents’ farmland after his father’s untimely demise, his crafty relatives seized every single acre of it, leaving him nothing. Undaunted, ‘Premaratne’ forged ahead with farming, the virtuous livelihood which was his heritage. He married the comely lass ‘Biso Menike’ who fell in love with him and had three children.
