Synopsis
The film follows the journey of Salem, a gifted and ambitious university student whose mental state begins to deteriorate suddenly and mysteriously. Gradually, he spirals into a world of hallucinations, delusions, and emotional breakdowns. As his close friend Muath and his sister Huda try to help him, the events unfold between his deep-rooted faith on one hand, and his attempts at both traditional and modern treatment on the other.
The psychological crisis is revealed through a shifting timeline between past, present, and future—moving between scenes at the university, spiritual healing sessions with a religious sheikh, a public breakdown in the marketplace, and his path through psychiatric care.
“Salem Not Salem” is a film about inner struggle, the stigma of mental illness, and the power of empathy and acceptance. It doesn’t tell a story of recovery as much as it reflects the reality of living with one’s shadow—learning not to fight it, but to live alongside it.
